Advice on Hair Loss Prevention, Treatments and Hair Restoration

Zoloft and Hair Loss Are Not a Common Combination

Zoloft and hair loss don’t go together like peanut butter and jelly, but that doesn’t mean the side effect of lost hair isn’t a possibility for those taking this drug. In fact, the number of drugs that cause hair loss is staggering. But, keep in mind that the side effect isn’t common.

Those taking Zoloft, or other antidepressant drugs, are not very likely to face thinning or shedding due to the drug itself. In fact, the risk of lost hair isn’t even in the top 10 of possible side effects of Zoloft. However, it is known in very rare cases to cause balding.

Many other drugs can cause a person to lose their hair. These drugs include, but certainly aren’t limited to, morphine, oral contraceptives, vitamin A, interferon, heparin, ibuprofen, warfarin, vindesine, many chemotherapy agents and lithium. Although many medications, including Zoloft, can cause temporary balding, the possibility generally isn’t high.

If a person taking a particular medication suspects it might be causing hair loss, it’s a good idea to check with a doctor. Some drugs can be dangerous to stop without medical advice first, such as antidepressants. If the condition is a serious concern, a physician should be consulted.

Anyone who suffers from drug caused loss of hair can at least feel a little relief. Generally, regrowth occurs once the drug that’s causing the problem is no longer taken. It might take a while for it to grow back, but generally it does. For example, regrowth after chemotherapy treatment may take several months.

Whether the concern is with Zoloft, too many vitamins or chemotherapy treatments, drug caused hair loss is generally not forever. For those who experience temporary balding due to a suspected drug side effect should absolutely always consult a physician before changing any recommending dosage. While most people don’t want to lose their hair, the condition can typically be reversed, but side effects from the sudden stoppage of a drug such as Zoloft might be serious. Be smart and get advice first.
