What Causes Hair Loss
What Causes Hair Loss? - Researchers Provide Answers
“What causes hair loss?” is a question millions of
people ask every year as they realize they are quickly shedding their
previously rich, thick hair. Fortunately, baldness research in the United
States and around the world spends billions of dollars looking for the
answer to this problem.
What doctors, dermatologists and scientists have discovered is that there
isn’t any one thing that causes you to lose your hair. Instead, baldness can
be caused by a number of different factors. How much you are losing and how
much you will lose in the future will rely on at several different factors,
and despite continued research we still don’t know all of the variables
involved.
What we do know about hair loss is that there are several main types of
baldness, and it may take a bit of research into your medical and family
histories to discover the real reason for yours. Some of the main types of
baldness include:
-
Male pattern baldness
- The tendency to get this is partially hereditary, but having a
history of it in your family doesn’t mean you will. It is usually caused
by too much DHT (a hormone) in men as they age and causes a receding
hairline and balding on top of the head.
-
Hair Loss in women
- This is also partially hereditary, but causes thinning of the hair all
over the scalp rather than an area of complete baldness.
-
Hair loss from illness - Researchers say this is
strictly a symptom of some underlying medical condition such as a
thyroid
problem or lupus. Occasionally you can also develop temporary baldness
from a medication that is treating an
illness.
-
Temporary balding - This is often caused by a hormonal
imbalance, such as during pregnancy or after childbirth.
Research continues into female and male hair loss causes, and the more
research that is done, the more hair
loss solutions there will be regardless of the cause.
