Do-It-Yourself Traction Alopecia Treatment

Although baldness may be a difficult condition to treat, it is usually not the case when it comes to traction alopecia treatment. Traction alopecia is a form of premature hair loss in women caused by irritation to the scalp in the form of tugging, pulling or rubbing over a period of time rather than a genetic or disease cause. It is also one of the easiest forms of baldness to reverse if you understand what is causing the “traction” on the scalp.

Many women don’t realize just how delicate the shafts and follicles are on the scalp, and so they don’t take proper care to prevent repeated aggravation of the area. Traction alopecia is usually seen in women who treat their hair in a number of ways to consistently irritate the same areas of the scalp, resulting in premature hair loss in these regions. Some of these include:

  • Wearing a ponytail that is too tight, resulting in tugging on the roots of a woman’s hair.
  • Wearing hats on a regular basis that cause premature hair loss around the areas where the brims rub.
  • Using tight braiding or cornrows that are worn for long stretches, tugging on the scalp and hair shafts.

By stopping the activities that have contributed to the problem early on, the premature balding can be halted in most cases. In most cases, once a woman has done this, hair loss products such as topical female hair loss treatments can promote regrowth of the hair in these areas. To keep the growth, do not revert back to the practices that led to traction alopecia in the first place. If treatment is put off for years, however, scarring of the follicles themselves may result in permanent baldness in these areas.
