Thyroid Hair Loss – Will My Hair Grow Back?
Thyroid hair loss is common in individuals being
treated for a thyroid imbalance, but there are ways to treat it or lessen
the impact it has on your life. While hyperthyroidism and hair loss causes
aren’t always linked, the connection is pretty strong in most cases.
Thyroid disease is caused by an imbalance in the hormones produced by the
thyroid gland located in front of the neck below the larynx. There are many
symptoms, including exhaustion, skin problems, unexplained, sudden weight
gain, and (in many cases) hair loss. The pattern of losing hair is usually
an “all over” loss rather than in patches. There are a number of things to
remember when you begin having these symptoms. Since the overproduction
(hyperthyroidism) or underproduction (hypothyroidism) of the thyroid hormone
(thyroxin) causes the problem in the first place, you may see a change once
you start treating your illness.
Both Overproduction and Underproduction of Thyroid Hormones May Cause
Balding
Remember that both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism may cause hair loss.
If you’re under treatment for any length of time, however, and you’re no
longer losing hair, but the lost hair hasn’t grown back in, you may be
unhappy with how thin it has become. Thyroid medications may be the cause–
some of them contribute to the problem, and talking to your doctor about
switching to a different treatment can help.
Natural hair loss remedies that
won’t interfere with your thyroid medications can also be beneficial.
Evening Primrose Oil is a natural supplement that causes your body to
nourish and repair hair follicles to stimulate re-growth. Discuss this type
of treatment with your doctor, of course, before using it.
Keep in mind that the most important thing is to find out the cause of
hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism first. Treat the thyroid disease first,
then determine what you can do about your hair loss and treat the condition
accordingly. This type of balding is reversible with proper care and
treatment in most cases.
