Premature Hair Loss
Premature Hair Loss has a Variety of Causes
If you’re like a lot of people, when you realize that you’ve
developed premature hair loss you assume it is simply “part of
getting older.” But this isn’t always the case, and a lot of what the
underlying causes are can be determined by looking at baldness patterns –
that is, they way in which you are losing your hair.
Common Causes of Baldness in Men
For most people who are prematurely losing hair, there are two predominant
patterns, some of which apply to men, others to women. There are also
various other causes that can cause unusual patterns, such as patchy
baldness, as well. The most common type seen in men is the typical “male
pattern baldness” which begins with thinning of the hair on the top back
or top center of the scalp. This is almost always caused by an excess of a
hormone called DHT, and can be slowed with proper medication if started
early enough.
Common Causes of Baldness in Women
Female pattern baldness is less common, and is usually seen in
post-menopausal women. It involves prematurely losing the hair over the
entire scalp, producing a thinner, wispier look of the hair. An excess of
endocrine is thought to cause this form of
hair loss in women and can often be treated with medications as well,
although different ones than those used for male pattern baldness.
Other Causes
Finally, illness or drugs (such as chemotherapy) can cause you to lose hair
prematurely in a variety of patterns. Baldness caused by medications usually
goes away after the medications are discontinued. The pattern of hair loss
in these cases varies, but often (as in illness) it falls out in patchy
clumps. Alopecia areata is loss of most or all of the hair on the scalp, and
is of unknown origin in some cases, although there seems to be a genetic
predisposition.
Knowing how to stop
premature hair loss involves understanding which pattern of baldness you
have, so do some honest evaluating and talk to a professional for guidance.
