Postpartum Hair Loss – What Is It and What Causes It?
Hair loss during the first few months after giving birth is
called postpartum hair loss. Many new mother experience hair loss
after pregnancy and although they are concerned about it, this is perfectly
normal. Even though it seems that you seem to lose hair at an excessive
rate, it will grow back once your body gets used to the fact that your
pregnancy is over.
Everyone sheds hair every day. Just look at the amount of hair that you
leave on the brush every morning. Researchers and doctors say that about 85%
of the hair on our heads is live and growing, about 5% to 10% is resting and
the other 5% is dead and ready to fall out. During pregnancy, this
percentage changes so that you lose less hair each day. This is because the
estrogen levels in the body are so high. In the postpartum stage (period
after child birth), the estrogen levels lower significantly and therefore
causing excessive balding.
Hair loss for postpartum women usually doesn’t occur until about two or
three months after the pregnancy. It takes the body this length of time to
adjust to the new lower levels. Many women do not even notice the extra
loss. The ones that do are usually the ones with long hair, but there is not
a lot that you can do about it. Once your body adjusts to the normal
estrogen level, it will resume its normal rate of growing and falling out.
While there is no cure for hair loss in postpartum women, if you are
concerned about the amount of hair you have lost, you can try experimenting
with new styles. This is a time when you can start trying new shampoos that
add more body and fullness to your hair. Many women with long hair get it
cut short after pregnancy and child birth, claiming they don’t have the time
to spend on their hair now that they have a new baby. You will enjoy having
a new look now that you are no longer pregnant and you don’t have to wear
the larger size clothing any more.
