Medications That Cause Hair Loss

Many people don’t realize that there are numerous medications that cause hair loss until they are taking one and suddenly find too much on their pillow at night. If you are one of those, however, who are currently taking a medicine that causes hair loss, we’re sure you’ve been upset by having to cope with this additional problem while you are taking a drug to treat an illness or chronic condition.

Is there anything you can do if your medicine is causing your hair to fall out? It depends on what kind of medication it is, how you want to treat the situation, and your doctor’s advice. Losing your hair can be a blow to your confidence, and when you’re sick this can be doubly devastating, so he or she will be understanding and helpful.

The first thing you should do is discuss any medications you are taking with your doctor to see if any of them are tied to hair loss. If you begin taking a medicine and start losing hair within a few months after taking it, it is possible the two are related. One definite link is the one between having chemotherapy and lost or thinning hair.

Common Causes of Balding Due to Medication

  • Some anticoagulants (blood thinners) cause hair loss
  • Birth control medication can cause thinning
  • Some antidepressants, but not all
  • Excessive Vitamin A (although you need it, too much of this vitamin can cause hair loss)

Remember, though, that you shouldn’t stop taking a medication because you believe it is causing your hair loss without talking to your physician about your options. Your medicines are being given to you for a specific reason, and it is best to discover how to cope with losing your hair (which may be temporary) rather than jeopardize your health.
