Hair Loss During and After Pregnancy
There are plenty of changes your body is going through when
you are expecting, and hair loss during and after pregnancy are just
two of many of these. There are many reasons for hair loss in women, but
when you are expecting there are generally two reasons that contribute to
it.
Vitamin & Mineral Deficiencies
Hair loss in women during pregnancy is
often a sign of a vitamin or mineral deficiency. While this is reason enough
to be upset, the condition is easily treated in most cases with the proper
supplements. Just mention the condition to your doctor; he will probably
suggest tests to see if you are deficient in any nutrients your body needs
during this crucial time.
Childbirth
Far more common is hair loss after pregnancy. You’ve probably seen women
whose hair becomes thicker, shinier and fuller when they have that “glow” of
pregnancy. For many of these women, however, thinning or shedding begins
about three or four months after delivery. This is common and it’s important
to remember it is only temporary. The reason is that during pregnancy, most
of a female’s hair goes into a resting phase and less falls out. The cycle
returns to normal as hormone levels stabilize after a woman gives birth, but
this means that all of the hair (up to 50% more in some cases) that has been
“resting” can be shed at the same time.
If you have heard horror stories about women losing their hair during
pregnancy or after childbirth, take heart. Now you know the reasons; it is
only a temporary condition and yours will soon return to normal as your
hormone rollercoaster settles down.
