The Techniques Used by a Hair Loss Doctor
Men and women who can’t live with a balding head often visit
a hair loss doctor to find out about procedures used for restoring
hair. These transplant surgeons usually work in a hair restoration center and perform
many different kinds of treatments and surgeries to help prevent further
hair loss. There are several different methods of medical hair restoration,
including new methods of transplant surgery.
Non-Surgical Restoration
The doctor you visit at the center will undoubtedly discuss many methods of
hair restoration with you. Not all of these methods involve surgery. For
example, you can undertake a regimen of using Rogaine or Propecia. Using
Rogaine does help to prevent further hair loss, but you have to be very
diligent and rub this solution into your scalp twice a day. The results of
this restoration treatment vary from one patient to another, but almost all
do experience regrowth. Propecia is an
easy-to-use hair loss product as it comes in pill form and does not
require as much effort in order to restore your baldness.
Transplantation Procedures
At the center, the doctor will examine the strands of hair remaining to see
whether or not you are a candidate for
hair transplantation. In order
for this technique to be successful, you do need to have some hair left on
your head. In this restoration technique, the doctor will take pieces of
skin containing hair from the sides and the back of your head. The doctor
will then take the follicles from these pieces and re-insert them into bald
places on the front of your head. However, even after you have undergone
medical hair restoration at the
center, you will need to take a drug such as Propecia to keep your remaining
natural hair intact, but you will never lose that which has been
transplanted.
Newer Techniques
There is now a new technique available at some centers specializing in hair
restoration. This is called the lateral slit technique and it involves
restoring hair through a transplant along the sides of the head and the
sideburns. These areas were once regarded as too difficult for restoring
hair. If you haven’t lost all your hair and still have a significant amount
remaining, a doctor can also do a technique called dense packing. This
involves preparing the sites on your head so that the follicles removed from
other parts of your head will fit perfectly in place.
