Hair Loss Discoveries of the Future
It is estimated that up to 90% of all men will experience
some degree of hair loss at some point in their lives, making hair loss
discoveries an area of profound interest for researchers and scientists.
While there is no guarantee that future hair loss treatments will come along
quickly or affordably, the amount of research underway makes it very likely
that at least some discoveries will be made for treating male pattern
baldness.
The Future is in Gene Therapy
For the last twenty or thirty years, treatments have focused on creating
drugs that slow the loss of hair and stimulate regrowth from existing
follicles. Discoveries such as minoxidil (Rogaine) and finasteride (Propecia)
have had a fair amount of success, but to effectively treat male pattern
baldness the future most likely lies in some form of gene therapy.
The reason is that as hair loss progresses, over time the affected follicles
gradually shrink and eventually die away. Existing medications slow this
process, but to truly prevent men from losing healthy follicles researchers
must discover the gene (or genes) that actually trigger the shrinking
process. If those discoveries can be made in the future then the next step
will be creating treatments that prevent follicles from shrinking and thus
help men who do not want to lose their hair.
Cloning of Hair Follicles
Once the key gene(s) is identified, the next step will be to develop future
treatments that likely will include cloning of hair follicles that can then
be transplanted into areas with pronounced loss. This will require
discoveries that enable not only the follicle but also the skin and blood
vessels that feed the follicles to be grown and transplanted intact.
In the Meantime...
The bottom line is that new discoveries for treatments will be made in the
future, but there is no way to predict the speed at which they will occur.
For men dealing with male pattern
baldness right now, most doctors will suggest using hair loss products and existing drugs
and medications to get the best potential regrowth and preserve as many
healthy follicles as possible in case new treatments come along sooner
rather than later.
