Hair Loss and Disease – What is the Connection?
Although male pattern baldness is the first condition you may
think of when thinning or shedding of hair is brought up, there is also a
link between hair loss and disease. So which type of hair loss is a
symptom of what diseases?
Hair loss is a symptom of a number of illnesses, many of which can strike
men, women and even children. In fact, some diseases even list balding as a
primary symptom. Some of these include Addison’s disease, alopecia, thyroid
problems, Cushing’s syndrome, Graves’ disease, lupus and even syphilis.
The severity of the hair loss will depend on the disease itself. In some
cases, such as Addison’s, the hair that is lost generally is not on the
head, but in other locations. However, other diseases that are associated
with balding can have more severe symptoms.
Alopecia areata, for example, is
an autoimmune disease whose chief symptom is hair loss. Those who experience
balding as a result of this disease may in fact grow their hair back, but
not always. This illness is a particular nuisance for its sufferers because
it can come and go with hair falling out then growing back, only to be lost
again.
Since hair loss, both minor and major, is a symptom of so many diverse
diseases, it’s a good idea for anyone who suffers from balding to check with
their physician. It might seem like a pretty minor symptom, especially in
the case of mild shedding, but it could be the key to finding a serious
problem.
Seeking medical advice can also lead to a solution. This, of course, depends
on what disease, if any, is causing the symptoms.
Hair loss in thyroid disease, for
example, generally goes away when the illness is treated.
To become bald, even if only temporary, can be a pretty big deal. If you
don’t feel well, check with your doctor to diagnose the symptoms to see if a
disease is the underlying cause of your balding. Depending on the type of
illness, you will probably grow your hair back once the illness is under
control.
