Hair Loss After Surgery
Hair Loss After Surgery is Not Permanent
Just as balding following the birth of a baby is not
permanent, neither is hair loss after surgery. Everyone is familiar
with chemotherapy related hair loss, but you may not realize that surgery
itself can cause you to lose some or all of your hair. This is because the
procedure is invasive to the body and is traumatic. The stress connected
with facing life-threatening diseases requiring surgery is also a
contributing factor to hair loss in women
and men.
Chemotherapy causes the patient receiving cancer treatments to lose his/her
hair during the course of the treatments. This is quite common and while men
do not seem to mind the baldness, many women wear a wig or a bandanna on
their head to cover up the loss of hair. Soon after, as the body starts to
recover from the surgery and the related treatment, the hair starts to grow
back and in some cases it is better than ever.
Knowing that you have cancer and that you require surgery is a traumatic
experience for anyone. Even the small stresses of daily life can cause
balding, so it is little wonder that stress such as this is related to a
rapid and complete loss of hair. When you have to have chemotherapy
treatments after a surgery, the effect on the body is that it kills the good
hair roots causing all the hair to fall out. The hairs fall out in large
clumps from various parts of the head, until finally all of it is gone.
The idea of chemotherapy is to kill any remaining cancer cells. However,
this treatment is very aggressive and attacks anything it thinks is related
to the cancer. This includes healthy hair. Before you have surgery, the
surgeon will explain all the side effects that this treatment does have so
you have all the information you need. In this way when you start to lose
your hair after therapy, it will not come as a complete surprise.
