Female Pattern Hairloss
Causes of Female Pattern Hair Loss
Balding is especially traumatic for women, but understanding
the causes of female pattern hair loss and how it works can help you cope.
The main cause of female hair loss is simply heredity and age – many women
are genetically prone to loss of hair, but not all of them develop it. It’s
also important to note that female pattern baldness doesn’t result in the
familiar “horseshoe” baldness seen in men. Instead, it is an overall
thinning without readily apparent areas with no hairs at all.
Of course, any loss of hair is upsetting when a woman’s appearance is often
tied to it. You want to be as attractive as possible and full, luxurious
hair is a part of that. Most of the time, pattern baldness in females
doesn’t start until after menopause, when levels of the female hormone
estrogen drop and cause thinning. It can, however, start at any age
(although this is much less common).
Some options for dealing with female hair loss and its causes include:
-
Rogaine – Rogaine formulated for women is the only FDA
approved hair loss product for female
pattern baldness.
-
Hormone Therapy - If you have been tested and it has
been determined that you have a hormone imbalance.
-
Medications - Discuss any medications you are on with
your doctor – some may accelerate hair loss in females, and you could have
them changed if this is feasible.
-
Hair Transplants - Surgical transplantation is a
permanent solution that will cause regrowth in the follicles once the new
donor hairs are implanted. While costly, the results with
medical hair restoration can
be extraordinary.
Talk to your doctor if you have noticed too much hair in your
brush or sink and less on your scalp. Female pattern baldness and its causes
can be treated so that hair loss doesn’t have to make you feel less
attractive.
