Female Pattern Baldness – What You Can Do About It

Female pattern baldness is a reality some of us have been facing, just as our male counterparts. However, women do not suffer from complete hair loss as men do. Female baldness generally involves thinning at some spot(s) or overall thinning. Immune disorders or alopecia areata, hereditary reasons or androgenetic alopecia, hormonal imbalance, aging, medication, illness, scalp infection and eating disorders may be some of the causes of hair loss in women.

Alopecia Areata

In alopecia areata, hair growing tissue is destroyed by your own immune system for some unknown reason. This may cause a sudden appearance of bald spots on a woman’s scalp or body. Within months and sometimes over a period of more than a year, it does grow again. Rarely does this pattern persist. Alopecia areata can be effectively treated with the help of medicines such as Thymusil, cortisone injections and cortisone creams. However, you should consult your dermatologist before taking any medicine for female baldness.

Androgenetic Alopecia

Androgenetic alopecia is the thinnng of hair because of hereditary reasons. This is the key cause both for females and males. Pattern baldness may be inherited directly as such or it may be caused indirectly by the hereditary diseases such as diabetes and thyroid malfunction. A woman suffering from this condition generally experiences thinning over the crown. Hair loss products such as Minoxidil and Finasteride are effective medications for this condition.

Female hair loss by hormonal imbalance is a result of variations in estrogen level in a woman’s body. Pregnancy, medicated contraception and menopause may cause this hormonal imbalance and subsequent balding pattern.

Other Reasons and Solutions

Other causes of female hair loss may be traction alopecia or losing hair owing to physical stress. Some of the possible causes could be tightly tying up hair or even some sudden shock. Pattern baldness also happens by fungal, bacterial or viral infections of the scalp. They can be treated by medication. Serious illness, emotional and environmental stresses are also possible causes among women. Massage is an effective remedy in such cases. However, in selecting the right treatment for your pattern balding your doctor’s advice is a pre-requisite and is the final verdict!
