Answers to Common Female Hair Loss Questions

When a woman starts to lose her hair, she has lots of female hair loss questions about the reasons why this is happening. There are many reasons for the cause of hair loss in women, which include female pattern baldness, changes in the body’s production of hormones, thyroid problems, emotional stress and even medication. A doctor will carry out the necessary tests to determine which of these are the probable causes of the hair loss and prescribe the proper treatment.

Medications & Traction Alopecia

Women seem to think that it is only men that lose their hair and when it happens to them they have a lot of questions. When you visit your family doctor to try to find the cause, the first thing that he/she will do is discuss any medications that you are currently taking. Blood thinning medication, for example, can cause hair loss in females. The doctor will also ask questions about how you care for your hair. Wearing your hair pulled back tightly can cause hair loss called traction alopecia and if you start wearing your hair loose before the tightness causes scarring of the scalp, it will start to grow back.

Pregnancy, Hormones & Stress

Some women may experience a loss of hair after they have a baby because of the changes in the body’s hormonal level. A significant event that causes stress could also cause a female to lose her hair and it does not necessarily occur immediately. Prolonged stress for example could start showing its effect on the body as long as three months after the event. Once the cause of the stress eases, growth will resume. It is possible that a woman might need to have anxiety medication to help with this, which is why it is important to consult a doctor to get answers to her questions.

Consult a Dermatologist

A doctor will have to ask a lot of questions and conduct a series of medical tests to determine the cause when a woman starts losing her hair. This is because there are so many factors that could be contributing to the problem. Quite often a female may have a scalp infection that is causing the hair loss and when the doctor prescribes the medication to clear up the infection, the problem is resolved.

Female problems, such as hormonal imbalances, also respond well to treatment. Female pattern baldness, however, may require more aggressive treatments and since there are not many of these on the market suitable for women, you will need to consult with a dermatologist. He or she will answer all your questions and find the proper female hair loss treatment.
