Advice on Hair Loss Prevention, Treatments and Hair Restoration

Is There a Connection Between Diabetes and Hair Loss?

Many people who are diabetic are concerned about their loss of hair and wonder if there is a correlation between diabetes and hair loss. There is a direct link between hormones and hair loss and this can have a bearing on diabetes. The main thing to consider if you have diabetes is your weight. You need to follow a healthy diet to help maintain the insulin levels in the body and thus help to control any hormonal imbalance.

Women who have diabetes are more prone to hair loss than diabetic men. This is because of the many ways that an imbalance of hormone levels can affect a woman. It is quite common for women to lose their hair a few months after giving birth and being diabetic could prolong the condition before normal hair growth resumes. The same thing applies to starting or stopping a regimen of birth control pills.

Although Vitamin E is really good for preventing hair loss and even spurs new hair growth, it is one dietary supplement that is not suitable for a person with diabetes. This is because this vitamin spurs the body to produce insulin. Just having enough of it in your diet is sufficient. When there is too much insulin in the liver, the excess is sent to other parts of the body and actually causes you to lose hair. It also causes an imbalance of hormones in the body.

If you are a diabetic you have to be really careful of your diet to ensure good health of the liver and pancreas, but also of the hair. The blood carries the nutrients to the hair folliciles and when the essential vitamins and minerals are lacking from the diet, you may notice hair loss or thinning. It is important to have a regular check up by your doctor to make sure that hormones are not causing you to lose any hair.
