Cure For Alopecia Isn’t Imminent, But Research Is Under Way

Although there is currently no known cure for alopecia, the condition is under research. Scientists are working hard to unlock the reasons behind the disease and hope someday to have better treatment methods for it as well as a possible cure. Alopecia is just one of a number of causes for hair loss, but one that can be particularly devastating to those who suffer from it.

In a nutshell, alopecia is an autoimmune disease that causes the body to attack hair follicles. The causes are not completely well known and the disease itself can strike anyone at any age. Alopecia leads to the loss of hair on the scalp and in some cases other locations on the body, such as the eyelids and beyond. Generally this disease causes hair to fall out in small patches and can leave behind an appearance that is troublesome for sufferers.

Although alopecia can be difficult for sufferers to endure and no cure exists at this time, the disease doesn’t always result in the hair being lost forever. Those who experience balding due to alopecia sometimes grow new hair.

Unlike other causes of balding, such as stress, medications, male-pattern baldness and even hormonal changes (the main reason for hair loss in women), alopecia is characterized entirely by the hair loss itself. There are some drugs used to treat it, such as steroids, but the effectiveness of these cures varies.

Those who face alopecia are on an uncertain course. No one can tell what direction the disease will take in an individual patient. Hair can grow back, or not. The loss of hair may stop all together, or it may come and go, which is a similar pattern or lack thereof with other autoimmune diseases.

While there isn’t a cure for this condition, there are alternative hair loss solutions. Some drugs, although not approved for treatment of alopecia specifically, might offer some help, hair replacements and wigs, although not a cure, can at least help boost a suffers’ self-esteem.

Although a cure isn’t available, it is encouraging that study is under way. The more scientists learn about the causes of alopecia, the more likely it is a cure will be found to stop the suffering of those who face this most devastating form of hair loss.
