Child's Hair Loss
The Many Reasons for a Child’s Hair Loss
There are many different reasons for a child’s hair loss.
Here are some of the major causes of hair loss in children.
Traction Alopecia
For young girls one of the causes could be that the hair is tied back too
tightly. This is called traction alopecia and the tight bands or braids pull
on the hair causing it to loosen from the scalp. The initial thinning is a
symptom that there is a problem and the solution is to loosen the hair so
that it doesn’t cause scarring of the scalp. If scarring alopecia develops,
the hair will not grow normally and the condition could be permanent.
Telogen Effluvium, Excess Vitamin E, Crash Diets
There are also more serious causes of a child losing hair. These include
telogen effluvium, which is a reactive process caused by
metabolic or hormonal stress or by medications. The condition causes diffuse
shedding. If your child has a high fever because of illness, this can cause
hair loss, as can having too much Vitamin E in the diet, chemotherapy, crash
dieting and bad injuries sustained in accidents. The loss of hair as a
result of these is temporary and it will grow back.
Trichotillomania
Trichotillomania (urge to pull) is a habit that some children develop as
they pull their hair through twisting. The condition
causes hair loss but it
is only temporary and it will grow back when you manage to find a way to
break the child of the habit.
Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata is a condition where children lose some of their hair on the
head or the body. It is caused by an autoimmune disorder. There is no known
cure for this condition and it is possible that when it occurs in childhood,
it will clear up on its own after about a year. A child’s thinning hair
could also be caused by an infection of the scalp. Getting the right
ointments and shampoo from the doctor will help to clear up the infection
and the hair will start to grow normally.
