Cause of Body Hair Loss
What is the Cause of Body Hair Loss?
There are millions of people who have some degree of
baldness, but few understand the cause of body hair loss, which is
much less common. It is much rarer to experience hair loss on arms and legs
than on the scalp, and when it does happen it usually causes a high degree
of stress.
There are several conditions that could cause loss of body hair on the arms
and legs, and it’s important to determine the reasons behind it before
trying to treat it. It usually isn’t a normal part of the aging process like
baldness can be. Some possible causes include:
-
Alopecia Universalis - A condition causing loss of
hair all over the body, which is tied to an overactive immune system. Many
people with this disorder also have thyroid, allergy or lupus.
-
Steroids - Use of steroids for long periods of time,
especially those for building body mass, can cause loss of hair on the
arms and legs.
- Seborrhea and Psoriasis - Certain types of skin
ailments such as seborrhea and psoriasis can damage the skin and hair
follicles.
-
Keratosis Pilaris - This rare inflammation of the
follicles will often cause balding, especially on the arms, where the
condition causes plugged follicles.
Chemotherapy can also cause an individual to lose hair all
over the body, and can be extremely upsetting, but is not a sign of anything
other than the expected reaction to extremely powerful cancer treatments.
Before considering treatments for baldness (whether on your head, arms, legs
or other parts of the body), talk to your doctor to decide whether there is
an underlying cause that should be addressed first. Your physician can then
recommend some possible hair loss
solutions.
