Birth Control Pills and
Hair Loss
The Connection Between Birth Control Pills and Hair Loss
The relationship between birth control pills and hair loss
is very similar to that of giving birth and balding. Female hair loss
reasons are often associated with a fluctuation of a hormonal imbalance
where estrogen levels rise and fall significantly. These pills contain
hormones that have a direct effect on the follicles in the scalp that
produce hair growth. The initial effect on females increases the number of
these follicles when they first start taking these pills.
Once the female’s body starts to get used to the increased hormones from
birth control pills, the rate of hair growth starts to slow down. It could
take several months before you start to notice that you are losing large
amounts of hair. The reason for this is that the rapid growth caused by
taking the pills has now reached the mature stage and the hair is ready to
fall out.
It is possible that females who do notice shedding while taking birth
control pills have a genetic tendency for hair thinning. If you are a female
concerned about the amount of hair being lost you should contact your doctor
to ascertain if there are any other underlying medical reasons. In most
cases, the doctor will tell you that there is nothing to worry about and the
situation will resolve itself once your body is able to regulate the
estrogen levels and it will resume normal growth.
The same situation occurs when a female stops taking birth control pills.
The decreased level of estrogen in the body is the reason why
hair loss in women occurs about two or
three months after you stop taking the pill. Once the levels get back to
normal, the shedding will stop and you will not have any more major problems
with hair falling out. This is a natural occurrence as the body adjusts and
will not be the reason for any permanent thinning or eventual baldness.
