Advice on Hair Loss Prevention, Treatments and Hair Restoration

Alopecia Wigs – A Cosmetic Respite from Baldness

Alopecia wigs are the most viable option for anyone experiencing permanent or temporary baldness. The exact alopecia areata hair loss cause is not known but it is sometimes associated with an autoimmune disorder of the body.

Common Causes of Balding

In some cases the body’s immune system, white blood cells, start attacking the hair follicles for some unknown reason. The follicles become small and their ability to produce hair declines. This causes hair loss in women and men in a patchy fashion. The hair re-grows after the immune function is restored. The frequency of balding and re-growth cannot be predicted. However, rarely will you witness a case of complete baldness, alopecia areata totalis, or a case of complete loss of hair on the body, alopecia areata universalis. Wigs are the best solution for this condition because there is hardly any medical or surgical treatment for this type of complete baldness.

Treatments for Alopecia- Are Wigs the Only Solution?

There is no common and widely accepted treatment for this disease applicable to all. The selection of medicinal or surgical treatments depends on the type of balding, the cause of alopecia areata and the extent of baldness. Hair loss products such Propecia may re-grow hair and stop further loss. Corticosteroids may be taken orally or as local injections. Topical ointments and Rogaine are also good alternatives. However, get your doctor’s advice before proceeding with any re-growth medication. When there is no medicinal or surgical treatment available for your type hair loss, you have to look for cosmetic solutions such as wigs.

As there is no definite and sure hair loss treatment for alopecia areata and its causes, hairpieces, wigs or toupees are the best options to cover up a balding or already bald head. These are cost-effective options with no side effects. Wigs come in synthetic and natural human hair. Toupees using natural human hair are definitely more expensive than wigs using synthetic fibers like Lycra. A good quality customized toupee can look natural. A double-sided tape keeps the wig in its position. Those that are completely bald may resort to silicon based comfortable suction caps that keep the toupee firmly in place.

The selection of wig for your type of alopecia areata requires expert opinion. Only a qualified hair expert can suggest which wig is suitable for your type of baldness and how to use it.
