Alopecia Totalis
Alopecia Totalis Strikes Men Unpredictably
Alopecia totalis is a form of general baldness that
can strike unpredictably and cause all of the hair on the scalp to be lost
over a short period of time. It is a variation of alopecia areata, which can
cause patchy loss of hair. Why complete loss of hair in men can happen with
this disorder and others only lose small amounts in distinct circles on the
scalp is unclear, but the cause is tied to a malfunction of the immune
system.
Totally Bald in a Matter of Weeks
While you will more commonly see men who have
male pattern baldness, alopecia
areata totalis can be disconcerting because it’s one of the least understood male hair loss causes and its onset
is more sudden than in male-pattern baldness. A man with this condition can
go completely bald in a matter of a few weeks. The baldness is complete,
creating the appearance of a shaved scalp.
You Might Grow it Back – And Lose it Again!
However, unlike other forms of baldness, the very unpredictability of
alopecia areata totalis means it can reverse itself at any time. Some men
completely lose their hair for months or even years, and then spontaneously
begin growing it back. This cycle can repeat itself over and over as the
genetic “switch” regulating the hair follicles turns back on the natural
growth cycle. Unfortunately, the medical community hasn’t yet determined how
to do this artificially.
However, in the case of men who have recently developed alopecia areata
totalis and have not gone bald completely, some of the
hair loss products on the market may
help some in stimulating hair growth, providing some relief.
