Alopecia Hair Loss
The Different Types of Alopecia Hair Loss
Alopecia hair loss is the medical term used to
describe balding or excessive hair loss. It can affect both men and women
and hair replacement for alopecia is possible when other more conventional
methods fail. In order to have a transplant replacement procedure done, you
do need to have some hair left on your head because the surgeon needs to use
these tufts of hair to replace the bald patches.
Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata is often first experienced in childhood and is thought to be
an auto-immune disease. Since this occurs so early and there is no cure for
it, by the time men and women do decide they would like to try surgical
replacement, there is not enough of it remaining to make this procedure
possible. An alternative hair loss
solution in this case is to use a wig to replace the lost hair.
Androgenetic Alopecia
Androgenetic alopecia often responds well to various restoration therapies
such as applying a topical solution of Rogaine to the scalp or taking a pill
called Propecia (for men only) on a daily basis. When you do experience hair
loss due to female or male pattern
baldness, this is usually the first treatment that the doctor will
prescribe. You may even need to use these treatments to try to regrow enough
to make hair replacement possible.
Hair Tranplantation
When you decide on hair transplant
surgery to replace your lost hair, the surgeon will first perform
several tests to make sure that you are a good candidate for the procedure.
This is to make sure that the hair follicles you do have are healthy and
will take root when the surgeon replaces them in the balding patches on your
head. For alopecia patients, surgical replacement is often a last resort and
a decision that they do not make lightly. They will have to endure some pain
after this type of medical hair
restoration and probably continue taking a regimen of Propecia each day
to make sure they do not lose any of their remaining natural hair.
