Alopecia Areata Universalis
Alopecia Areata Universalis - Complete Baldness
Alopecia Areata Universalis in a layman’s language is known
as complete hair loss or baldness. In some cases this also includes hair
loss from the body. Quite interestingly, the medical name sounds like a
disease with no solution whatsoever and the sound of it might scare anyone.
However, in reality, it is no so. It is just a
male pattern baldness with larger
proportions, which happens when our own immune system stops your hair
follicles from producing hair fiber. This leads to weakening of hair and
subsequent hair loss. The medical explanation to baldness would be that
lymphocytes in hair follicles release a chemical compound called cytokines.
Cytokines limit hair growth, leading to baldness. People with this type of
alopecia areata lose complete scalp hair and this can happen to anyone, even
if you are physically very healthy.
Alopecia Universalis Treatment
Alopecia Universalis or complete male baldness does not generally have any
proper symptoms and are often discovered by hairdressers. In this condition,
there is hair loss along with very little or no hair growth. Males suffering
from this type of pattern baldness have hair loss in three stages. First,
there is a sudden loss of hair, followed by growing bald patches and lastly
the growth of white or gray hair. 1% of the people suffering from
alopecia areata go through the alopecia universalis condition, in which they lose
hair from all over their body.
There are no standard treatments or hair
loss prevention procedures for alopecia universalis but at times,
cortisone injections can help cure this type of baldness. Cortisone is
injected wherever hair loss has occurred. Usually, following this treatment,
hair grows back to its normal condition over a period of time. This
treatment for pattern baldness in males is also referred to as the
intralesional steroid injection. However, hair growth takes place only in
the injected area and not on the entire scalp or body.
The most successful treatment recorded so far for alopecia areata males is
immunotherapy. It works by provoking allergic dermatitis in the affected
area. This can cause irritation and swelling of the lymph gland but is
effective. Since there are no permanent
hair loss solution available for
this type of complete pattern balding in males, people can use cosmetic
solutions such as wigs and toupees for alopecia universalis.
