Alopecia Areata Causes
Alopecia Areata Causes Hair Loss in All Ages
Alopecia areata causes hair loss in men and women,
young and old and doesn’t seem to follow a particular pattern that can be
pinned down like some other forms of balding. For instance, men’s hair loss
that is called “male pattern baldness”
usually looks the same in most men – the traditional “horseshoe” pattern
with hair all around the head but little or none on top.
What is It? What Causes It?
On the other hand, alopecia areata can look different in men and women and
it isn’t linked to age as many forms of baldness are. Alopecia areata is the
loss of patches or all of the hair (either on the scalp or even over the
entire body) that is triggered by an immune system response. It is caused by
the body’s white blood cells over-reacting and “attacking” the hair
follicles and stopping growth. The condition can last months or years; it
appears suddenly and can just as suddenly go into remission. Hair that is
lost during an active phase will grow back, but could fall out again at any
time.

Men and women with alopecia areata certainly suffer from social discomfort,
but it is nothing like the pain that children with this illness feel. The
younger a person is when he or she loses hair as a cause of this condition,
the more difficult it is to treat and the more severe it tends to be.
Treatments
Some treatments such as minoxidil and cortisone can stimulate hair growth in
both men and women, but when stopped the hair may fall out again if the
disease is still in an active phase. If you or someone you love has alopecia
areata, talk to a doctor about the cause and ways to cope with this form of
hair loss.
