Accutane and Hair Loss
Accutane and Hair Loss Connected, But Rare
Accutane and hair loss can go together, but for those
facing extreme acne, the benefits can outweigh the downfalls. As it is with
most medications that cause hair loss, those who lose hair during a course
of treatment with Accutane generally grow it back.
While Accutane has a number of serious side effects, hair loss is one of its
least significant precautions. The medication, however, can cause joint
pains, severe birth defects and a number of other more worrisome conditions.
Because Accutane has caused so many other serious side effects, beyond hair
loss, it is only prescribed in rare cases.
Medications that Cause Hair Loss
When it comes to hair loss and medications, the list of drugs that can cause
a noticeable amount of lost hair is pretty large. Everything from Accutane
to oral contraceptives, cancer medications and even ibuprofen can cause some
form of hair loss or another.
If a hair loss and medication connection is suspected, it’s a good idea to
bring the problem to the prescribing doctor’s attention. Whether it’s a
dermatologist that’s prescribed Accutane or an oncologist that’s ordered
chemotherapy treatments, it is best for a doctor to determine the actual
cause of the hair loss. If a connection between medications such as Accutane
and hair loss is made, a doctor will know the best course of action to take.
For many medications, it’s not wise to stop a course of treatment midway.
Some medications, even if they cause a person to lose hair, can be dangerous to stop
without careful supervision. With this is mind, it’s never a good idea to
discontinue a course of medication without medical advice first, even if the
drug is causing a loss of hair.
Accutane has proven to have great results in the treatment of severe acne.
Unfortunately, it has been shown to cause a loss of hair in some cases.
Those who have a problem with Accutane and hair loss can generally expect
hair to regrow when the medication is stopped.
