Advice on Hair Loss Prevention, Treatments and Hair Restoration

What Do PCOS and Hair Loss Have in Common?

PCOS and hair loss have a direct relationship with one another. PCOS is an acronym for polycystic ovarian syndrome and it can affect women at any age from puberty onwards. The first symptoms of this disease usually manifest themselves as thinning hair all over the scalp. Most women don’t even realize that they have PCOS until they seek help for thinning hair.

In addition to PCOS, some women going through menopause can also experience thinning of the hair. This is because the levels of the male hormone androgen are higher than the levels of estrogen, which is the female hormone. A doctor can prescribe medication to help combat this type of hair loss in women and once the hormonal levels in the body balance out, normal growth resumes.

Hair loss is not the only symptom that women with PCOS can experience. While they notice that their hair is starting to get thin, they may not be bothered too much about this. What does force them to look for help is the fact that hair starts to grow on other parts of the body. One of the symptoms of this condition is that a mustache starts to thicken and darken. Women then look for help in hair removal, rather than for replacing the hair they have lost.

The reason for hair thinning to occur with PCOS is that the body produces high levels of insulin. This stimulates the ovaries to produce higher than normal levels of testosterone and this could lead to infertility when the ovaries do not produce eggs. To get help for this condition and to prevent further shedding, you should consult with your doctor to have a series of blood tests done to determine whether you have excessive amounts of insulin in your body. Medication helps to control this and will help to stop your loss of hair.
